Helmcken House

Helmcken House was built by Dr. John Sebastian Helmcken, a surgeon with the Hudson’s Bay Company. It is one of the oldest houses in British Columbia still on its original site. Dr. Helmcken set up house in Victoria when he married the daughter of Governor James Douglas in 1852. He went on to become a statesman and helped negotiate the entry of British Columbia into Canada, as a province. The good doctor’s original 19th century medical kit is among the interesting items on display.

Aboriginal Cultural Festival 2017

The Royal BC Museum is honoured to host the Aboriginal Cultural Festival again from Friday, June 16 to Sunday, June 18 in celebration of Aboriginal culture, values, language and cuisine.

The festival begins with a ceremonial welcome canoe paddle through traditional lands to Victoria’s Inner Harbour. The Songhees Nation and Esquimalt Nation—the event hosts—will then lead the traditional protocol and opening ceremony before a parade of Nations officially launches the three-day celebration in anticipation of National Aboriginal Day on June 21, 2017.

Free Lecture: New Plant Discoveries from Northern BC’s Alpine

Join Royal BC Museum Curator of Botany Dr. Ken Marr at this free evening lecture as he discusses recent plant discoveries in the high reaches of Northern BC.

Ken’s presentation will cover images of the landscapes in which he and his Royal BC Museum colleagues have collected rare plants, common plants and a pseudoflwer. He’ll also talk about a puzzling gap in the distribution of several species and what we are learning from DNA markers about the migration of several species.

He will provide many, many images of flowers!
