Thinking Critically About Museums

A Feedback and Professional Learning Workshop for BC Teachers

The Royal BC Museum is looking to the future and is committed to creating community connections, educational programs, and inclusive, thought-provoking experiences for all British Columbians and visitors from around the world. Part of this process involves re-imagining the existing galleries to be more responsive to all communities who use the galleries- including educators!

We are inviting teachers and education students to join us for a free professional learning workshop that explores strategies for making museums more accessible, inclusive, and relevant for all learners.  The workshop will take place, in part, within the currently closed Old Town gallery on the 3rd floor of the museum. We will invite teachers to think critically about museums and unpack how they might be used more thoughtfully in education.

Participants will also be invited to engage in a sharing session to provide feedback to museum staff on their ideas for the future of the museum and ways the Royal BC Museum can better meet the needs of educators and their students.

The session will be led by Paula Waatainen (Vancouver Island University Faculty of Education), Lindsay Gibson (UBC Faculty of Education), and Chris O'Connor (Director of Community Engagement at the Royal BC Museum).

Light refreshments provided.
