Live at Lunch: Silk, lace and pearls: the Strasbourg girl's 17th century dress

Live at Lunch is a monthly series where you can hear directly from curators, archivists, staff and researchers at the Royal BC Museum as well as from fascinating community members and guests.

Join Royal BC Museum’s textile conservator Emma Marentette as she discusses the findings of her research into a 17th century mummified girl's burial ensemble. An unusual survivor from around 1630, the layers of silk, lace and linen remain in their original positions since the funeral of the girl, presenting a unique opportunity to understand not only single garments but the outfit as a whole. The research was greatly aided by the use of CT scans, which expanded the ability to take patterns of each garment, in turn allowing a hand sewn recreation of the entire wardrobe.

Please note that this presentation does include some images of human remains, as the girl is still dressed in her clothing. For this reason, and out of respect for the deceased, this Live at Lunch lecture will not be recorded.
