RBCM@Home (Kids) with Sea Smart

How does trash get into our oceans?

Join Paloma Corvalan, from Sea Smart, for this fun, hands-on activity where we'll learn about how trash from the land can end up in our oceans. Kids will be adding colours to paper and splashing water on it, so make sure you get set up in a space where they can get a little messy.

Sea Smart is a Vancouver-based charity that delivers online programs, school workshops, after-school programs, summer camps, and shoreline cleanups. Sea Smart's fun hands-on programs get people excited about our oceans and empower them to make the world a better place. Paloma Corvalan, Sea Smart's Program Manager, is a biologist with a PhD in Animal Behaviour and over 15 years of experience working with children.

Supplies needed:

  • 1 sheet of printer paper (have extra on hand if needed)
  • Markers
  • A bowl of water (~ 1.5 cups of water, with space to put hands inside the bowl to sprinkle water)
  • A baking tray or another tray that has a lip, as we will be pouring water into it
  • Optional: food colouring in small dropper bottles. If not available, you can also use water-based paint. This is a fun aspect of the activity but can get messy. Please supervise your child if needed or show them how to use this carefully
  • Optional: a spray bottle of water

If you are not able to access through Zoom, we will also be streaming on Facebook Live. Please visit the Royal BC Museum Facebook page.

If you missed past sessions, check out our RBCM @ Home (Kids) YouTube page.

RBCM @ Home (Kids) is like a museum playdate online. Visit with members of the museum staff who are working from home, along with families from across BC, as we make and learn together. Each session will have some kind of making activity, so get your paper and pencil crayons ready. RBCM @ Home(Kids) takes place on Wednesdays at 11 am, visit our calendar for topics, presenters and a list of materials so you can join in with hands-on activities at home.

For adults and youth, check out RBCM @ Home. This program takes place on Tuesdays at 12pm and highlights members of the curatorial and collections staff who are working from home during the pandemic and discover how they do their work, how their work is reflected in their homes and what they're working on now.
