Museum Happy Hour: Moving Images

Explore the museum galleries and the BC Archives' Moving Image Collection with us in new and surprising ways. Early experimental silent film from BC, some paired with a live score by local musicians, will be projected onto gallery walls through remixes & mashups. The evening will also include a collaborative draw-on-film animation activity that will be projected at the end of the night.

MUSIC:

  • Trevor Lang and Shilo Preshyon (Tango Lima, Cartoon Lizard) will provide immersive synth-driven soundscapes for the evening.
  • Ora Cogan bring silent film to life with her ethereal instrumentation and haunting vocal harmonies. 

 

DRAW-ON-FILM ANIMATION ACTIVITY:

  • Be a part of a collaborative Draw-on-film animation on 16mm film. Also known as direct animation or animation without camera, draw-on-film is an animation technique where footage is produced by creating the images directly on film stock. Participants will have the chance to decorate portions of a clear 16mm film reel, and at the end of the night we will project our creation for all to see! With support from MediaNet.

CURATORS:

  • Aimée van Drimmelen is a multidisciplinary artist and musician based in Victoria. Her Film + Sound Series, which pairs live music with film in interesting ways, continues this summer at the Ministry of Casual Living. 
  • Dennis J. Duffy worked with the RBCM archival audio-visual collections intermittently since 1978, and was instrumental in obtaining many of the experimental films in the BC Archives' Moving Image collection. In retirement, he continues to research and write about BC film history, including pieces for his blog, Seriously Moving Images.

This is a 19+ only event. Valid photo ID is required for entry. To ensure the safety of our guests and museum collections alike, Security will conduct ID, bag and spot checks at the entrance. Prohibited items include any controlled substance, alcohol (not purchased at the event) and dangerous items. Any items not permitted at the event will be collected at the door prior to entry. The Royal BC Museum will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items.
