Acquiring Private Records at the BC Archives

Guest Speaker: Sally Butterfield, Archivist, BC Archives

The BC Archives acquires public records from the Government of British Columbia as well as private records of provincial significance from individuals, families, organizations, and businesses. The BC Archives receives hundreds of inquiries each year from private individuals or organizations interested in donating their records – each inquiry is considered on a case by case basis.

Sally Butterfield is an archivist with the primary responsibility of considering private record inquiries. Sally will provide an overview of the collections policy, considered criteria, and the process of acquiring new records through to making them available for public use. She will
highlight some recent acquisitions, including Grafton Tyler Brown’s Giant’s Castle Mountain and an Emily Carr “funny book,” to illustrate the acquisition processes and to draw attention to some of the BC Archives’ new collections
