Live at Lunch: Exploring the Deep

Find out what's happening at the museum and archives in these monthly talks featuring curators, staff and researchers. Please note, instead of our typical first Wednesday of the month, this program takes place on January 16th.

Hidden Secrets: Exploring the Ecology of Deep-Sea Volcanos and Hydrothermal Vents

Seamounts—underwater mountains that rise more than 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) from the seafloor—are offshore biodiversity hotspots. Very little is known about these ecologically significant areas along the BC coast. In July 2018, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Haida Nation, Oceana Canada and Ocean Networks Canada embarked on an expedition to explore seamounts near the islands of Haida Gwaii. Discover what they found and the role the Royal BC Museum plays in safeguarding these specimens.

About the speakers:

Heidi Gartner, invertebrate collection manager and researcher will be joined by DFO colleague Tammy Norgard, Deep Sea Ecology Program Head, to discuss this project.
