Blue Whales: Return of the Giants takes viewers on a journey of a lifetime to explore the world of the magnificent blue whale, a species rebounding from the brink of extinction. Following two scientific expeditionsone to find a missing population of blues off the exotic Seychelles Islands; the other to chronicle whale families in Mexico’s stunning Gulf of Californiathe film is an inspirational story that transforms our understanding of the largest animal ever to have lived. 

From its almost incomprehensible size to its spectacular feeding habits, the surprising role it plays in the health of our oceans, and its awesome long-distance communications, Blue Whales provides an unforgettable window into the lives these animals liveand the extremes scientists must endure to study them. Joined by a cast of supporting characters from dolphins and sperm whales to sea lions and orcas, the blue whale finally gets its turn to be star—life-sized in 3D on the giant screen! 

Here are five fun facts about blue whales that will leave you ready for more:

  • The average blue whale is 24 metres long, same as the width of our IMAX® screen!
  • The blue whale’s tongue can be as heavy as an elephant, or even heavier
  • Blue whales live 80 to 90 years, with some seeing the age of 110
  • Scientists collect earwax to age whales and determine their migration patterns
  • Blue whales have a fibrous material called baleen instead of teeth, possessing the same structural protein as hair, nails, feathers and horns. Baleen filters the whales’ food from the large volume of water they take in when they open their mouth.
