Class Act- Eco Art for a Cleaner Future

When you notice a problem, what actions can you take to start making things better? 

For one grade 2 class at Discovery Elementary School in Shawnigan Lake, the problem is plastics in our environment and one possible solution is creating art with that trash. These dedicated and creative learners, led by educator Vanessa Tan, have designed and built a collaborative mural from collected trash, specifically bottle caps. This up-cycled artwork, titled Plastic Free Salish Sea was created by the entire class, and their hope is to inspire others to clean up their community and get creative.

For this session of RBCM @ Home (Kids), join this class as they explain their process, what they've learned, and what you can do to help. 

The mural , Plastic Free Salish Sea, will be on display in our Orcas: Our Shared Future exhibition from 11am-3pm on Friday June 25 and Saturday June 26. Reserve a timed ticket on these day to see the amazing artwork in person.

RBCM @ Home (Kids) is like a museum playdate online. Visit with members of the museum staff who are working from home, along with families from across BC, as we make and learn together. Each session will have some kind of making activity, so get your paper and pencil crayons ready. RBCM @ Home(Kids) takes place on Wednesdays at 11 am, visit our calendar for topics, presenters and a list of materials so you can join in with hands-on activities at home.

For adults and youth, check out RBCM @ Home. This program takes place on Tuesdays at 12pm and highlights members of the curatorial and collections staff who are working from home during the pandemic and discover how they do their work, how their work is reflected in their homes and what they're working on now.
