Building a Critter with Dr. Joel Gibson

Join Curator of Entomology Dr. Joel Gibson for some anthropod making fun.

All anthropods, land critters, are made up of parts (legs, antennae, mouthparts, eyes, wings, body sections). Each of these parts can be in different shapes, sizes, and colours. The number of parts and how they are arranged tells you if a critter is an insect, a spider, a millipede, or a centipede. Let's explore these parts and get creative with builiding a critter and finding out what kind of critter it is.

RBCM @ Home (Office Hours) is online support just for educators (including parents at home!). Royal BC Museum learning staff will be on hand at each session to walk educators through the museum and archives’ online resources and answer questions.  RBCM @ Home (Office Hours) takes place every second Monday and Friday. We’ll offer live support through Zoom and by phone during Office Hours.

Pysanka, or Ukranian Easter Eggs, are beautiful and intricately designed decorative eggs that have been an important element of Ukranian culture for centuries. Join us to learn about the importance of this tradition and how it has evolved over time. You’ll also have the chance to create your very own pysanka, using traditional wax resist methods, under the guidance of experts.

This workshop is suitable for ages 15 and up.

Fieldtrippers: Living Fossils at Beacon Hill Park - CANCELLED

Trees like dawn redwoods, sequoias, gingkos, magnolias and araucarias (monkey puzzle trees) were common during the age of dinosaurs, but are relatively rare today. Many of these species can be found in Beacon Hill Park. Join curator of palaeontology Dr. Victoria Arbour and curator of botany Dr. Ken Marr for a walk back in time in this beautiful urban park. We’ll look at some fossil samples from the museum collection, talk about how palaeontologists use fossil plants to learn about ancient climates and discuss how plants have changed since the time of the dinosaurs.
