Home Learners Workshop Series

This four-week workshop will be an opportunity to investigate the lives of historical and forgotten Victoria residents, up close and personal. Who were they? How did they live? What motivated them?

This social history workshop will consider these questions and more, examining clues found in photographs, documents and artifacts within the museum’s collections and archives. 

Carillon Recital - Songs of Sorrow and Hope

Provincial Carillonneur, Rosemary Laing will play songs of sorrow and hope in recognition of the Transgendered Day of Remembrance and Transgendered Week of Resilience events taking part around the city. The Transgendered Day of Remembrance, which occurs annually on November 20, is a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia and to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community. Bridging Victoria: Stories from the Archaeological Past

This free pop-up event will showcase three never-before-exhibited local archaeology collections. Handle artifacts and learn what bottles and ceramics from Chinatown, woodworking from the old Songhees Village (Esquimalt), and military objects from the depths of Esquimalt harbour can add to our knowledge of the past. The exhibit will also include incredibly preserved organic material like leather shoes and basketry — rare and invaluable finds in archaeology!

How did Canada treat immigrants in the past? Pop-up Exhibit

As part of their unit Treatment of Minorities in Canada students from Macaulay Elementary School explored the question "How did Canada treat immigrants in the past?". You can see how they answered this question in a pop-up exhibit taking place in Century Hall for a limited time. Posters, interactives and mini-displays will be on exhibit and some of the students will be on hand to answer your questions about their projects.  

Performance as Medicine: Indigenous Performance Art Symposium

Performance as Medicine is a one-day interdisciplinary and inter-generational symposium that will seek to present and explore Indigenous philosophies and contemporary expressive forms. The program was developed by Iroquois Mohawk artist Lindsay Delaronde, who is currently the Indigenous Artist in Residence with the City of Victoria. Register to enjoy a series of interactive workshops and a lunch, or drop in later in the day for a site-specific performance and a panel discussion.

This is a City of Victoria initiative, presented in collaboration with the Royal BC Museum.

Museum Happy Hour: Sound and Music Pub Quiz

Our format for November is inspired by pub quizzes. The November 23 event is a little bit different. Students from the University of Victoria's Anthropology of Sound will present new sound scapes in our permanent exhibit for your listening pleasure after our sound and music themed pub quiz. Maximum team size is six people and there will be a prize for the winning team. 

Drinks and light fare available for purchase. The quiz portion will be held in the Old Town gallery and the sound scapes will be throughout the Becoming BC gallery.
