Come meet your ocean neighbours!

As part of Ocean Week Victoria, we are highlighting various Salish Sea habitats and animals that live there, in the Natural History Gallery for a limited time.  Discover some of the over 3000 marine animal species that call our surrounding ocean home and why it is so important to protect them. This tour will start in the 2nd floor lobby, at the top of the escalator.

The Royal BC Museum is celebrating Ocean Week Victoria!
 
Come check out our Sea Otter specimen and tidepool and transport yourself to the exposed beaches of the West Coast of Vancouver Island in our ocean diorama. Feel how dense our Sea Otter specimen’s fur is, learn the differences between Sea and River otters, and check out the live intertidal animals in our tidepool.

Sensory-Sensitive Screening at IMAX® Victoria

Sensory-sensitive screening of Superpower Dogs intended for guests who find the immersive IMAX® experience prohibitive. In addition to low lighting and low volume throughout, doors will be left open and movement and discussion during the film will not be restricted. This film is in 2D, no special glasses required. Theatre capacity will be reduced to 80 seats.

Community Engagement Booth- Smithers Pride

If you are in Smithers, please stop by our community engagement table during the Smithers 7th Annual Pride Event. We'll be joining our friends from the Bulkley Valley Museum and the Smithers Public Library during the event. The RBCM Community Engagement team will be on hand to answer questions and listen to ideas about the future of the Royal BC Museum. We will also have fun objects and specimens to look at.

Japanese Tea Ceremony Demonstration

May is Asian Heritage month. Join members of the Urasenke Tankokai Victoria Association as they demonstrate the Japanese tea ceremony (Chado- The Way of Tea). Urasenke has long been active in promoting worldwide understanding and appreciation of chado. The four principles of chado are Wa (Harmony), Kei (Respect), Sei (Purity), and Jaku (tranquility).

Native Plant Garden Tour

Join one of our educators on a guided walking tour of our Native Plant Garden! Learn about our plant neighbors here on the BC coast and Indigenous uses. About 8 different plants will be highlighted.

Meet at the bottom of the escalator in the main lobby. Note that this tour takes place outside rain or shine, please prepare for the weather accordingly.

Art with Chrystal Phan

May is Asian Heritage month. Join us for this FREE livestream with BC artist Chrystal Phan. 

Between 1979 and 1982 more than 60,000 refugees from South East Asia resettled in Canada. Almost 75% were from Vietnam. Artist Chrystal Phan’s family arrived from Vietnam in the fall of 1980. Join Chrystal for a virtual visit where we’ll look at her family’s story, examine some of her paintings and do a drawing activity together. Bring paper and pencil.

To celebrate Asian Heritage Month, this Live at Lunch event will share the work being done by Dr. Tzu-I Chung, Curator of History, and Yuxwelupton Qwalqaxala, Director of Culture Transformation and UNDRIP Implementation. They will talk about how they are preserving diverse community cultural heritage, considering the practices around the world and how they think about protecting cultural heritage through facilitating community expressions.

Thanks to ground-breaking advances in science and archaeology, we now know a lot about Stonehenge and the ancient people who built it. Archaeologist Mike Parker Pearson will share how we can now see Stonehenge as part of a wider prehistoric landscape and what we know about the remarkable Neolithic builders.
