Precursors to the modern-day ice road truckers, Cat trains (sometimes referred to as tractor trains) hauled goods and mining supplies from the south. The name Cat train is derived from the bulldozer company Caterpillar. They were first used to haul supplies in the 1930s. This one would have travelled five days to cross Great Slave Lake, and it sits in front of Yellowknife’s fuel tank farm on Jolliffe Island in 1953.
