Passenger flight on Lake Osisko in Rouyn-Noranda

At the time when watercourses were the only access roads, aviation played an important role in the development of the mining region of Abitibi. It was in Rouyn-Noranda, in 1924, that the first regular air service was established in Canada. Connections between Haileybury, Ontario, and Angliers, Rouyn and Lake Fortune in Quebec were provided by the Laurentide Air Service Company. The plane was used to transport passengers and merchandise; however, it also carried mail and newspapers. This service was appreciated by settlers, as it broke their isolation and brought them closer to people. In the 1930s, there were at least four companies serving clients from Rouyn-Noranda: Canadian Airways, Commercial Airways, Dominion Skyways and General Airways. They were all located on Lake Osisko, which was used as an airport for the sister cities. The plane in the photograph is a Stinson SB-1 Detroiter G-CAGF.
