VICTORIA, BC — A breathtaking new film about the importance of wetlands conservation, Wings Over Water, hits the giant screen at IMAX® Victoria, Monday. Narrated by award-winning actor Michael Keaton, Wings Over Water tells the compelling story of these wetlands and three of the bird species that call them home.
Filmed across the Prairie Pothole Region—encompassing parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, down to North and South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Montana—the film is a tribute to these important breeding grounds and the hundreds of species of shore birds and ducks call this region home.
“The film tells the story of three amazing bird species—the Yellow Warbler, Mallard Duck and Sandhill Crane—all of whom can be found in the wetlands of British Columbia,” says Alex Weaver, visitor experience manager at IMAX® Victoria.
As the glaciers retreated at the end of the last ice age, they left an astounding gift of connected rivers, lakes and wetlands across the heartland of North America. Today, these largely unknown water highways remain an oasis for wildlife, from the herds of bison that still roam part of the Great Plains to the swaying grasslands, wildflowers and honeybees, and especially for the millions of magnificent birds that migrate along these “flyways”.
“We’re very excited to open this film at IMAX® Victoria as there are so many excellent educational link opportunities,” says Weaver, noting the upcoming launch of the Royal BC Museum’s new Learning Portal pathway, Birds of a Feather.
While the link hasn’t gone live just yet, learners will discover what you can learn about birds from the Royal BC Museum when the site launches next week: https://learning.royalbcmuseum.bc/pathways/birds-of-a-feather.
Sure to entertain and delight audiences as they soar above the clouds with their feathered friends, Wings Over Water hits the giant screen at IMAX® Victoria Monday and runs through the fall.
