The Pioneer Convent

Bishop Modeste Demers, Bishop of Vancouver Island, travelled to Quebec in 1857 seeking missionaries to journey to distant Victoria and, once there, to engage in the task of teaching local girls. The Sisters of St Ann rallied to his call.

Leaving Quebec on April 14, four members of the Congregation and their lay assistant travelled for weeks by sea and rail, crossing the Isthmus of Panama before finally reaching Vancouver Island on June 5, 1858.

Prior to their arrival, Bishops Demers arranged for the purchase of a cabin. Upon their arrival the Sisters found a small, unkempt log cabin awaiting them, measuring 30 by 18 feet (9.14 x 5.49 metres).
