Victoria’s Early Francophones

French-Canadians have lived in Victoria since it was founded as a Hudson’s Bay Company post in 1843.  They worked in the fur trade, came on behalf of the Catholic Church and followed the stories of gold in British Columbia to Victoria.

Victoria’s first French Language newspaper was published in 1858, the Courrier de la Nouvelle-Calédonie. In 1860 the merchant Jules Rueff and hotel owner Sosthèmes Driard formed La Société Française de Bienfaisance et Secours Mutuels de Victoria. On June 8th, 1860 the Society opened a twenty bed hospital on Herald Street. The hospital remained open until 1884.
