Gitxsan Pole

Gitxsan Pole, 1954
Carvers: Mungo Martin, David Martin
and Henry Hunt
Based on: Gitxsan Memorial Pole, ca 1900

The original pole stood in the village of Gitseguekla (Skeena Crossing) on the upper Skeena River. It was carved around 1900 in memory of a chief known as Wistis and erected by the man who succeeded to his position. The figures are the crests of the chief’s family and refer to a famous house of his lineage. The original was acquired by the provincial museum in 1953 (RBCM 17367 a-c). Mungo Martin, David Martin and Henry Hunt made this version the following year.
