In 1985 the Royal BC Museum acquired the carving tools that Henry Hunt used in Thunderbird Park. The handle of this traditional woodworking tool is carved in the shape of a frog. RBCM 13799

In 1985, the Royal BC Museum acquired the carving tools that Henry Hunt used in Thunderbird Park.  This type of knife is used for detailed work.  A whale and a bird are represented on the wooden handle. RBCM 17818.

Northwest Coast artists use adzes like this one to shape their carvings.  Henry Hunt used a file to make the blade. It is one of a number of his  carving tools that were acquired by the Royal BC Museum in 1985.

The handle of this adze depicts a whale.  The tool is an old, traditional form that is still used by Northwest carvers today.  It is one of Henry Hunt’s collection of carving tools that was acquired by the Royal BC Museum in 1985.  RBCM 17813.

Unpainted masks were often made by Henry Hunt and his family for sale to collectors rather than for use as dance regalia.  This one represents a killer whale.  Two profile whales meet in the centre of a human face; fins extend on either side of the mouth.  RBCM 9411.

Feast Dish, 1971


In Northwest Coast feasts, food is presented in ceremonial dishes in the shape of chiefly crests. This dish represents a bear.  The heads carved on the sides of the bowl are other crests belonging to the family.  RBCM 13854.

Model Pole, 1971


A Thunderbird and a chief wearing a blanket with a Killer Whale design are depicted on this pole made of Yellow-cedar. As the attached plaque indicates, the pole was presented by Queen Elizabeth II as a trophy in the British Columbia Junior High School Band and Choir Championship in May, 1971. RBCM 14996.

This model pole shows an Eagle above a Bear holding a Frog in its mouth. Like RBCM 14996, it was a trophy presented in May of 1971 by Queen Elizabeth II during the British Columbia Junior High School Band and Choir Championship. RBCM 14998.

A Raccoon is represented in this mask, characterized by sharp teeth, white stripes and pointed ears. RBCM 15116.

Feast Dish, 1980

 


This dish is made in the form of a Sea Otter lying on its back holding its favourite food - a Spiny Sea Urchin - on its stomach, which forms the lid of the dish. Food containers like this were used in feasts. RBCM 16613.

This finely carved mask represents a Bear. It is an example of Henry Hunt’s style as a mature carver, which has influenced generations of Kwakwaka’wakw carvers. RBCM 17936.
