Three canoes were suspended inside the structure. Like the carvings, the canoes were purchased by Charles F. Newcombe in different communities: a Kwakwaka’wakw ‘family canoe’ from ‘Yalis (Alert Bay), a Coast Salish fishing canoe from Sardis, and a Nuxalk fishing canoe from Taliyumc (Kimsquit). They were also acquired during the same time period, in 1913. (One of the canoes is just visible in the photograph.) RBCM 2055 (Kwakwaka’wakw canoe), 2330 (Nuxalk canoe),.2424 (Coast Salish canoe).
