Repatriation and Community Liaison

The story is familiar to so many Indigenous people - their sacred objects removed from their communities to be held in storage or on display in museums all over the world.  The Royal British Columbia Museum’s Repatriation Program exists to provide support, research, and resources to First Nations who have identified and wish to facilitate a return of sacred objects that are of importance to them.  We are considering applications from Indigenous people, to advance this important work.

Reporting to the Head of Indigenous Collections and Repatriation, the Repatriation and Community Liaison facilitates and manages consultations with various Nations by developing the consultation framework and decision-making processes, establishing working relationships with Indigenous communities, organizing consultation sessions and providing advice. The position maintains an inventory of BC Indigenous artifacts located outside of their source communities and helps facilitate the transfer of important cultural property from other museums where requested by the source community.
