The Royal City Music Project: Archives and the Golden Age of Rock & Roll in Victoria

Glenn Parfitt, BC music historian and heritage advocate, will describe how he created an online archives – the Royal City Music Project. He’ll recall Victoria’s ‘Golden Age of Rock & Roll’ during the 1950s and 1960s. He’ll evoke Victoria’s ‘Summer of Love,’ when the capital city thrilled to a ‘battle of the bands’ in July 1967.  The winner had the honour of being the opening act at a concert at Memorial Arena. The concert (advertised as a ‘love in’) featured the Painted Ship and the Collectors from Vancouver and the Doors from Los Angeles. A poster for the event was created by a young and now legendary BC artist, Bob Masse.
