Ron Wilson (b.1945)
Mask, 1971

In this mask, Haida artist Ron Wilson used elements from a Nisga’a portrait mask in the Royal BC Museum (RBCM 9913) that was collected at Lakalzap in 1912, adapting them to his own style.  The mask is unpainted birch wood.  RBCM 13896.

Simon Charlie (1919 – 2005)
Welcome Figure, 1967

The distinguished Coast Salish (Cowichan) artist, Simon Charlie, carved this Welcome Figure at Thunderbird Park for display at Expo67 in Montreal.  It now stands near the entrance to the First Peoples exhibit in the Royal BC Museum to welcome visitors and remind them that they are in traditional Coast Salish lands.  The figure is almost 3 meters tall.  RBCM 19114.
