This lovely, huge work by accomplished portrait painter Sophie Pemberton is one of several fine portraits of British Columbians in the Archives’ collection.

Also known by her married names Beanlands and Deane-Drummond – but always “Sophie” – Pemberton studied art in London and Paris, and was British Columbia’s first native born professional artist to receive international acclaim. Her works were exhibited in the London and Paris salons. She was an accomplished landscape artist as well as portraitist.

Gift of Armine M. Pemberton, the artist’s niece, in 1948.
